ATCs provide a day service for people with learning disabilities who are over18 years old. They offer a variety of services, according to people's needs. These include social and leisure activities such as cookery, art, sport, drama, dance and rebound therapy. There are also programmes for developing independence skills and enabling access to other services. Where appropriate, centres can offer support for work experience.
Currently centres are open from 9am - 4pm, Monday to Friday. Places are allocated on a sessional basis and according to identified needs. Some full-time places are available. However, many users of the service have a package of activities, which involves sessions at college plus days in a centre. It is usual for people to attend the centre nearest their home unless they have an identified need which can only be met by another centre.
All the centres operate a keyworker system. This means that there will be a named worker responsible for liaising with each carer and the service user. The worker identifies what support and development needs the service user has, and what activities they would like to participate in. Reviews and service planning use a person-centred approach.
