Disability Discrimination Act

Since December 1996 disabled people have had legal rights, not to be discriminated against. The Act covers areas such as employment, access to goods, services and facilities and education.

For example, the Act could help someone if they have experienced any of the following kinds of discrimination due to their disability been:

• offered a lower standard of service e. g. in a shop, cafe or pub
• turned down for a job
• refused access to a public place e. g. cinema.
