Until April 2003 if someone claims Housing Benefit to pay their rent they can also claim the cost of any support services they get as part of that tenancy. However, Housing Benefit will not pay for care, medical assistance or specialist therapies. After April 2003 these costs will be paid through the 'Supporting People' Grant, administered by the Local Authority, and Housing Benefit will only pay the rent bit.

The Independent Living Fund (1993) is administered by an independent organisation, and is intended to help people who want to stay in their own home, rather than go into residential care. Criteria are very strict. For example, for example, a person must get the highest rate of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) .
