A list of ideas for how to make information easier to understand using words and symbols:

Try to put the symbols on the left hand side of the page if possible

Don't use too many symbols or words on a page as this can be confusing

Use easy words and short sentences

Use large writing like font size 14 or more

Use a clear font like Arial or Helvetica

To highlight important points use bold rather than italics

Black writing on white or light coloured paper is the most clear
-
Use lower case text as much as possible, for example book not BOOK

Some symbols are easily recognised, others are not and may have to be taught

Even when words and symbols are used, some people may need further support to understand the information given

As well as symbols, you can use photos and pictures to make things easier to understand
