Human Rights Act

This Act became part of English law in October 2000. It means that the government, the police, the courts and the local authority have to respect your rights. It is the first time that UK citizens have a list of basic human rights in law. There are many different parts to this Act some of these are listed below:

• the right to life
• freedom from torture and degrading treatment
• right to liberty
• respect for privacy and family life
• right to education
• the right to vote.
