Speech And Language Therapy For Children With Learning Disabilities

Home > Directory Contents > Children > Speech and Language Therapy for Children with Learning Disabilities

Children with a learning disability may have problems of communication, ranging from feeding difficulties in infants (correct sucking, swallowing and chewing are essential in development of speech), to inability or difficulty in understanding language and/ or saying words.

Speech and Language Therapists assess the individual needs of children and provide follow-up work as appropriate. They run training courses on language development including alternative methods of communication such as Makaton (a vocabulary of signs for people with learning disabilities) .

They also provide advice and support to parents, carers, schools, training centres and hospitals on communication problems and set up joint programmes of work where needed.
