Research has shown that people with learning disabilities are much more likely to become victims of certain types of crime, including bullying and physical and sexual abuse. People with learning disabilities may need support and encouragement in speaking up.

The Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999 lays down measures to help vulnerable witnesses including people with learning disabilities to give evidence. These include allowing the use of

• video-recorded evidence,
• screens in court,
• allowing an appropriate person to help the witness to communicate with legal officers in court.
